Town of St. Stephen, Berkeley County, South Carolina

The Town of St. Stephen is located in Berkeley County, which was originally known as Craven County.  The county seat is Moncks Corner.  The Parish of St. Stephen was estiblished in 1754 by the French planters who began moving up the Santee River and assimilating with the English settlers.  The soil was rich and productive during this time, yielding crops of rice; grown in the floodplain along the river, and indigo planted on the uplands producing wealth to many plantation owners.  Later in years cotton would be successful and helped to continue the growth of the region.

The Town of St. Stephen was established and centered aroung the Old Brick Church.  The Old Brick Church, known as the St. Stephen Parish Church, is presently known as the St. Stephen Episcopal Church, and is still referred to as the Old Brick Church even in present day.  The historical church still stands, and is located on 196 Brick Church Circle; at the intersection of the Old River Road (now Highway 45) and the Old Black Oak/Bonneau Road (now Mendel Rivers Avenue).  The St. Stephen Parish Church was built on the high uplands in 1769 with the wealth gained from the production of indigo.  Today this beautiful historic treasure still has regular services, and marks the center of the town of St. Stephen.  It is a well preserved example of a small Georgian country parish church.  The historical Church and cemetery are both on the National Register of Historical Places.  Congressman L. Mendel Rivers grave site is in the cemetery.  He was a native of South Carolina and rose from a humble, rural background to become one of the most influential and controversial members of the U.S. House of Representatives, an elective position which he held for thirty years.

Primarily an agricultural region, the Town of St. Stephen has a rich and vibrant history.  The people have seen prosperity, war, growth and decline.  Timber and the lumbering industry provided jobs and income during the late twenty century, and still does today.

In present day; the people of the town and surrounding areas, look forward to the annual St. Stephen Catfish Festival in the spring, Christmas Parade, Christmas Tree Walk, and the Community Christmas Cantata.  A History Series with Historian Guest Speakers is scheduled during the fall season.  A fall festival; Octoberfest, is also scheduled annually.

St. Stephen is a small town, but the people of the area take pride in working towards preserving heritage for future generations and welcomes you to enjoy the many activities and events, which make living in a small town so enjoyable!

Mayor Robert B. Hoffman, and the people of St. Stephen; invite you to visit the many areas in and around town; to experience the preservation of history, culture, scenic beauty, and enjoy the activities and character of our town!
