A Message from our Mayor
Thank you for your interest in the Town of St.
Stephen. We have established this website to provide you with a variety
of information and useful services. Feel free to explore the website
and provide us with any questions or comments you may have. You are
invited to join us and stay awhile; as we preserve the past and provide
for the future.
St. Stephen is a wonderful town; to live, work, and
engage in the many recreational activities our area has to offer. We
are located at the heart of the northernmost part of Berkeley County in
South Carolina.
Residents of the town enjoy a high quality of life
and a strong sense of community. Our town staff does an excellent job
of providing a clean and safe environment for our residents.
A special acknowledgement of appreciation to the
following people who worked diligently to provide the St. Stephen
Community Visitor Center with a grant awarded by the U.S. Department of
Agriculture through Clemson University: Walter Harris; Director,
Innovation Center, Clemson Institute for Economic and Community
Development, Columbia, SC, Paul M. Horton; Director, Sandhill REC/CIECD,
Columbia, SC and Greg White; USDA Rural Development, Columbia, SC. The
grant helped the St. Stephen Community Visitor Center get started and
was greatly appreciated.
Special acknowledgement of appreciation is also
given to the Palmetto Conservation Foundation who have partnered with
the Town of St. Stephen to open the Palmetto Trail Outdoor Center. A
special recognition is given to the following members of the Palmetto
Conservation Foundation; Oliver Buckles and Ken Driggers.
A Grand Opening will be held on September 6, 2008
in honor of the new St. Stephen Community Visitor and Outdoor Center.
The Palmetto Conservation Foundation has opened the new Palmetto Trail
Outdoor Center in the St. Stephen Community Visitor Center, 1174 North
Main Street. The new Outdoor Center will serve as an eco-tourism
headquarters for the St. Stephen, Pineville, and Jamestown areas with an
emphasis on northern Berkeley County. Organized hikes and tours will
leave from the Visitor Center guided by naturalists, historians, and
experienced trip leaders. For enjoyment and convenience there are
kayaks and mountain bikes for rent, along with books about the area,
tee-shirts, walking sticks, and the like for sale.
Enjoy a visit to our area to spend some leisure
time, as you see the preservation of history, culture, and enjoy the
activities and character of our community.
